The House
Sarah looked at the old house, what would be inside it? Stepping onto the porch, it creaked. She felt goose bumps and the sense of someone watching her.
Opening the door and stepping inside, her nose wrinkled, the smell of disuse. Even though the house had been lived in just a week before.
There seemed to be a layer of dust over everything. She didn’t think her uncle would have allowed the house to be this dirty.
She heard a creak upstairs and she jumped. Someone was upstairs, this was now her house. She grabbed a poker from the fire and ventured upstairs.
The first room was empty but just as dusty as the rest of the house. The next room held a bed and a closet that was full of old clothes.
As she entered the next room a smell of roses greeted her. This room was clean and on the table was a big bunch of fresh red roses. There was a fire burning in the grate, and sitting by the fireplace a brown Labrador.
She noticed no light fixtures, no evidence of 20th century life. Then she noticed the dresser it had a bowl and pitcher like her grandmother used to tell her about.
A voice behind her said. “About time you arrived Darling.”
Sarah spun and met the eyes of a handsome young man dressed in clothing that were more suited for a hundred years ago. Sarah noticed as she turned that her jeans had changed into a long dress and her sneakers into delicate shoes.
She didn’t know what had happened, but stepping over the threshold into the room changed everything. She looked back into the hallway and there was a rich red hall runner, which had not been there when she entered.
Somehow Sarah had been transported back to a time before electricity, before indoor plumbing, before she was born. This house was full of mystery.
